What exactly is the cloud?

Clouds in blue sky

As one of our predicted Technology Enabled Care trends for 2021, we are confident you will hear people talking about cloud a lot more.

But what exactly is the cloud?

A quick google and you will find many different descriptions, but I think this is an excellent starting point.

“Simply put, the cloud is the Internet—more specifically, it’s all of the things you can access remotely over the Internet. When something is in the cloud, it means hardware and software services delivered from a provider on the internet.”

Typically, businesses would have a number servers often located within their offices or in a designated ‘server room’. Cloud replaces these physical servers, with servers that are in large data centres all over the world, which businesses can access via the internet. These data centres are managed by huge businesses including Microsoft, Google or Amazon. As a result, using cloud computing, means users and companies don’t have to administer physical servers themselves or run software applications on their own machines.

Nearly all of us will already be interacting and benefitting daily from these services, if you use a web-mail client like gmail, that ability to access your emails anywhere is all due to the emails being stored in the cloud, and pulled down to your device every time you want to view them.

Therefore, we can all quickly realise that it is not something to be nervous or even confused about, as we are already embracing it every day!
