Cardiff Council manages nine supported community living schemes across the city, providing sheltered accommodation for older and vulnerable individuals. The council’s focus is on enabling residents to live independently, with the aim of improving the welfare and safety of the community through innovative housing solutions.

The challenge

Cardiff Council needed to upgrade its analogue telecare services in response to the UK’s upcoming digital switchover in 2025. The council required a reliable and future-proof solution to ensure uninterrupted service, following the failure of its previous supplier to offer a competitive, fully digital system that could meet its needs. The new system also required the necessary accreditations needed to ensure it was safe for residents.

The solution and result

In late 2019, Cardiff Council selected Appello’s Smart Living Solutions (SLS) to upgrade the telecare services across its community living schemes, as it met Cardiff’s requirements around safety accreditation and functionality where the other suppliers could not.

Appello’s SLS integrates advanced features like wall-mounted tablets with video/audio capabilities, enhancing resident safety and communication.

The first two implementations at Clos-y-Nant and Brentwood were completed by early 2020, with no disruption to resident care. Appello’s monitoring centre took over interim monitoring while Cardiff upgraded its own system to ensure continuity.

The transition to digital telecare was seamless, and the SLS solution continues to provide enhanced safety and efficiency for Cardiff’s residents.
