About the company

The challenge

PA Housing needed to replace legacy analogue telecare systems across over 150 schemes and nearly 25,000 flats. Driven by BT’s announcement of the analogue switch-off, the goal was to ensure compliance, enhance resident safety, and provide a standardized telecare solution.

“The whole process of tendering takes a long time, and you’ve got to get it right. As BT are switching over soon, I’d suggest you start now. It’s important to really look at the market. A lot of suppliers are not NOW IP compliant, they don’t have interface digital solutions, so you’ve got to find a supplier who does that and enables your digital journey, because otherwise you will get stuck. People will promise things they can’t deliver, which it’s going to add more time and risk to the project.”

The solution and result

Following a procurement exercise in 2020, PA Housing partnered with Appello to begin their digital journey, installing the Smart Living Solutions (SLS) system into their developments.

The £5 million project, spanning three years, is progressing faster than anticipated, with two schemes completed and several others underway. The SLS system enables social inclusion with features like flat-to-flat communication, while integration with the My PA app offers residents additional benefits such as accessing rent cards and paying bills.

 PA Housing is also working towards a fully digital telecare solution to replace temporary analogue-to-digital bridges, improving response times and efficiency.

“One of the things we learnt in terms of COVID was that social inclusion was very important and that the SLS (Smart Living Solutions) system will allow social inclusion because you can have flat to flat communication and things like that, which will be useful to get people talking to each other. It is all new for them, but the customer feedback is pretty good.”

The integration of the My PA app has also improved safety and security for residents, allowing door entry monitoring and use of alarm buttons in case of an emergency.
